How Hearing Loss Can Affect Relationships & What To Do About It

Hearing loss doesn’t just affect the person with the problem, but all of their family and friends. When a person has trouble hearing, it can disrupt their life in simple ways, such as blasting the television or not being able to hear everything on the radio. However, as the person’s hearing worsens, it can begin to affect relationships, such as being unable to hear someone on the telephone, or missing chunks of conversations in daily life. To the person with the problem, they start to feel isolated–while everyone around them starts to become frustrated with their inability to communicate properly.

If the condition is disrupting said person’s everyday life, it may be time you talked to them about it–be it your mom, grandmother, or father–it may be time for them to get a hearing aid. Convincing them that they need a hearing device may be simple, but in many cases, it’s not. Most people, especially older people, take a pride in a sense of their independence. Admitting that they are having trouble hearing is almost akin to admitting defeat, it’s admitting that they can’t depend on their own two ears to hear well anymore, and for many this is both embarrassing and upsetting.

You may try bringing up the idea of buying digital hearing aids in conversation, or pointing out a commercial when it comes on television. You might just try sitting down with the person and talking. Let them know that using a hearing aid isn’t embarrassing, let them know that there isn’t anything wrong with it, and that for many, loss of hearing is just part of the natural progression of aging. Remind them how much easier and better it was when they could hear clearly–the first time–how easy it was to communicate properly with others.

For many, loss of hearing is an upsetting experience that can destroy communicative abilities, disrupt relationships, and even cause depression. It doesn’t have to be. Let your loved one know that they aren’t alone, and convince them to purchase a hearing aid so they can be happy again.
