Many alcoholics keep doing what they are doing because it’s what they are comfortable with. We all stay in some type of comfy zone. It may not always be the best one or the one that makes us happy, but it gets us through the day. That’s why sometimes it’s helpful to an acoholic to change the entire zone, not just one thing. After getting alcohol treatment and becoming sober it can be important to keep yourself busy and staying active doing things that will keep you away from wanting to drink.
One way is to go on an artificial chemical fast. Placing a focus on cleaning the body omits alcohol and leaves the body healthy. With the body getting healthier, a person wants to be more active becasue they physically feel better. When performing activities, the alcoholic should avoid situations that induced an urge to drink. Avoiding “triggers” can be a tremendous help in any kind of behavior change.
If the alcoholic is a solitary drinker than they should not be left alone during their key drinking hours and oppurtunities. If they are socially inclined then they should avoid social situations that involve alcohol. It’s also very important for the alcoholic to develop some type of support system if for no other reason than to feel worthy of concern. The support system shoudl be firm and have no alcoholic involvement.
It’s very important for the self esteem to have something to build on. Cleaning the body helps clean the mind. A person who is more healthy has a better chance of feeling good about themselves than an unhealthy one. This is a key point in any life change.
