Aura migraines can be a painful problem

Migraine causes episodes of severe or moderate headache, which is often felt on one-sided and pulsating, usually last between several hours to three days, accompanied by gastrointestinal upsets, such as nausea and vomiting, and a heightened sensitivity to bright lights (photophobia) and noise (phonophobia). Approximately one third of people who experience migraine get a preceding aura.

For the 20-30% of migraineurs who suffer migraine with aura, this aura comprises focal neurological phenomena that precede or accompany the attack. They appear gradually over 5 to 20 minutes and generally last fewer than 60 minutes. The headache phase of the migraine attack usually begins within 60 minutes of the end of the aura phase, but it is sometimes delayed up to several hours, and it can be missing entirely. Dealing with a migraine while pregnant

When it comes to women’s pregnancy, migraine headaches are like a lottery. If you are a women prone to getting migraines, you may experience stronger headaches, or you may find that they diminish during your pregnancy. It is also normal to experience your first migraine when you are pregnant. Some studies have found a slight correlation between migraines and hormones. And that migraine affects women three times as often as men and is frequently inherited.

It has been reported that about 15% of women feel the worsening of migraine or experience a new onset of migraine during pregnancy, and as such, there is no definite way to predict how or if migraine will change during pregnancy. However, it has been noted that women who have migraine without aura or women who have menstrual or menstrually-related migraine are most likely to improve rather than those women who have migraine aura because they are more likely to continue having attacks during pregnancy.

But you should remember that worsening or new-onset migraine does not have an effect on the outcome of the pregnancy and the patient needs to be reassured and be guided of this. Most women that experience migraine for the first time during pregnancy will continue to experience migraine thereafter.
